Scratching the Surface: Fixing a Scratch in Auto Glass
Chips, cracks, and scratches are found in abundance among the windshields of Canmore vehicles due to high amounts of sand on the roads in the area. Finding a scratch on your windshield or any of the windows on your vehicle is annoying, but thankfully, surface scratches can be remedied.
Before you begin, it’s important to check the depth of the scratch. If you can run your fingernail over the scratch and it does not catch, you’re good to go. However, you’ll need professional auto glass repair if the damage is deeper or has developed into a crack.
- Glass Cleaner
- Microfibre cloths
- Preferred scratch removal product
Before repairing the scratch, use a microfiber cloth and glass cleaner to thoroughly clean the affected area. Once cleaned, mark an outline around the scratch using painter’s tape or dry-erase marker.
2. Apply scratch removal product
When using retail scratch removal products, it’s important to carefully read the instructions before you begin to ensure the efficacy of the product.
Acrylic Scratch Remover
This product works by filling the scratch in before drying to a clear finish, causing the scratch to disappear into the glass. This is by far the easiest method of glass scratch removal.
Whitening toothpaste containing baking soda might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of glass repair. However, it is one of the most effective products for the removal of auto glass scratches. Simply dab some toothpaste on the scratched area and buff it in with a microfibre cloth. Using a damp cloth, wipe the excess toothpaste from the area and check to see if there has been an improvement in the scratch. Repeat as needed.
3. Final Cleaning
Once you’ve removed the scratch, grab a clean microfibre cloth and your glass cleaner and clean the entire windshield to remove any residue or fingerprints left over from the repair.
